Music And Pets

As I mentioned in Molly’s story God told me that Molly wanted me to listen to certain songs after she died because they either comforted me or reminded her of me.  I always have had a deep appreciation for all kinds of music, and I think that is why after losing many of my pets, God gave me similar messages.

And, several of my pets gave me songs long before they passed away.  I am including those as well.

I thought it might be fun to share those songs for my fellow music lovers.  Each song displays the uniqueness of each of my pets and our relationship. If you wish to listen to the songs, the song titles are links to their YouTube videos.

My first loss as a cat mom was Bubba, in 2001 when he was only nine years old.  He was a very sweet, gentle, loving soul.  The song he gifted me was Lynyrd Skynyrd’s incredible song, “Freebird”

Bubba as a baby with his big sister, Fluffy, not long after I adopted him. He was a little over one month old here.

Sugar was a very sweet, silly, absolutely adorable lovebug of a cat.  He passed away unexpectedly in 2002, only a few months after Bubba.  He gifted me with two lovely songs by Lonestar, “I’m Already There” and “Not A Day Goes By”

My favorite picture of Sugar (facing the camera) with his best buddy, Poo Kitty. They adored each other, and spent countless hours playing or snuggling.

Magic was my first cat, and my first “heart lock” cat (I adopted this term from the lovely book, “Confessions Of An Angel Cat” by Nic Tatano).  We were incredibly close from the moment he chose me in 1990 until his peaceful passing in my arms in 2007.  Immediately after his death, I was watching the tv show “Touched By An Angel.”  In this particularly moving episode, Wynonna sang, “You Were Loved”, and felt it really fit my feelings for Magic.  Then I she sang “Testify To Love” which made me think of what a beautiful gift straight from God he was, so it too became one of our songs.  Magic was never one to remain silent, however, so he asked God to give me America’s “You Can Do Magic”.  It really fit as I would have done anything for him, and I believe he would have done anything for me.

Magic with Georgie as a kitten in 2002. He was a natural dad, always happy looking after babies.

Sneezer was one of the first kittens Magic helped raise.  She was the runt of her litter, but the feistiest.  She passed away at just over eighteen years old in 2009 from lung cancer.  I was surprised when shortly after her death, God told me she wanted me to listen to George Strait’s “I’m Carrying Your Love With Me”.  Not that Sneezer was not a very loving girl, but I never would have predicted she would have chosen such a sweet song.

Vincent was a very special guy.  He belonged to my Granddad, and was so much like him!  Having him after Granddad’s death was very comforting.  He too was a southern gentleman, smart, quirky and a lot of fun.  His song of choice was “Someday We’ll Be Together” by the Supremes.

My handsome, dignified Vincent hanging out with me one day.

This is Jasmine.  She was a beautiful Snowshoe with more love, courage and strength than most people.  She survived three strokes and fought her way back from each one before the final one took her from me.  She was also very loving, feisty, and opinionated – an absolute joy!  Her song of choice was Aerosmith’s “Angel”, and the powerful, passionate ballad fits her beautifully!

Bear was my first dog, and the one who helped me hone my skills with communicating with animals.  He was extremely headstrong, intelligent, loving, and a wonderful dad to kittens.  One day when listening to Trace Adkins’ song, “This Ain’t No Thinkin’ Thing”, he decided we needed to dance.  He approached me, put his front paws at my waist and began “dancing” to the music.  How and why this happened is beyond me, but it was adorable and the song always makes me smile because of bear.

Bear being the happy, wonderful “mom” to five month old Bo. He had a huge heart, but especially for kittens.

Pretty Boy was a wonderful Turkish Angora mix that I adopted with his brother as only about four week old babies found in a lady’s yard.  He was a very sweet, loving, gentle guy, even when diabetes was causing him massive discomfort because his glucose levels refused to regulate.  Not once did he ever lose his sweet demeanor.  His song of choice was Queen’s “I Was Born To Love You.”

Pretty Boy just being his handsome, floofy self.

This handsome guy is Curious George, aka Georgie, Pretty Boy’s brother.  He was intensely curious and mischievous from the moment we met, which is why the name.  He was sweet, loving and so much fun.  His song of choice was the beautiful, haunting 1990 ballad by Steelheart, “I’ll Never Let You Go”

One of my favorite pictures ever- Georgie on the fireplace mantel, admiring his own handsomeness

Weeble was one of three sisters, and the most maternal of all of them.  She was so loving, always wanting to offer comfort and snuggles if I was upset.  She was also an adventurous baby, the first one to explore the world beyond her nesting box.  Such a smart and adorable little girl.  Her song of choice was the lovely “Angel” by Jon Secada.

Weeble sat this way often as a kitten and young cat, which is why I named her Weeble. She reminded me of the Weeble Wobble toys from the 1970’s.

Punkin was a very sweet, special, silly and unique boy.  He had feline PTSD, I believe due to some interaction with a dog since he was easily triggered by dogs.  A few years prior to his unexpected, sudden death in February, 2024, he told me one day to listen to Trace Adkins’ lovely song, “This Ain’t No Love Song” as it was our song.

Fergus was a beautiful, high spirited, passionate, playful and adventurous little guy who loved lima beans.  He also guarded what I referred to as his “magical tail”.  His tail was orange which looked unusual since the rest of him was white.  He seemed afraid someone might steal that magical tail, so he protected it.  When he died so unexpectedly at just under four, it was absolutely devastating.  Considering how flamboyant he was, his song of choice being Queen’s “The Show Must Go On” was no surprise!

Just look at that magical tail!

Fergus’ sister, Grace O’Malley, also is a fan of Queen.  As a kitten, she heard “Love Is The Hero” by Freddie Mercury and Billy Squire, and immediately was a fan.  She never told me it was our song, but her snuggles when she heard it as a baby told me she thought it was.

Grace has a heart on her back! Isn’t it cute? She is well aware of how pretty she is and will not hesitate to use that to get what she wants.

Bo was a very passionate, free spirited, loving, Norwegian Forest Cat mix who never failed to keep me entertained.  One day when I was baking a cake, he heard Journey’s “Faithfully” come on the radio, and did the most amazing thing.  He opened a cabinet door, stood upright, used his front paws to balance himself on the door and back into my legs.  We “danced” to the music, and it became our song from then on.  We often danced to it over the years.

Bo just being Bo.. lol

Next up is Molly.  Such a special, loving girl could not let me  go with only one song!  She gave me several.. Michael Bolton’s “New Love” was her first, and she gave it to me long before getting sick.  She said it was because I helped her have a happy new life and she appreciated that so much.  She also gave me Jon Secada’s “Angel” but the Spanish version since no doubt she would not have wanted to take over Weeble’s and my song.  Plus I always have loved the Spanish language, which she knew.  Just after she passed, God told me she wanted me to listen to Queen’s “Who Wants To Live Forever”, which definitely fit.  Not only is the song beautiful and elegant like Molly, but I often called her my queen.  It is why I chose that song on her tribute video on her YouTube channel.  When I was struggling so much after her death, she also sent me two inspiring songs by Disturbed: “The Light” and “A Reason To Fight”, both of which helped me tremendously.  And, she also sent “Sisters Are Doing It For Themselves” when I was going through a particularly challenging time, I think as a way to remind me of my own strength.

My beautiful little sister, Molly Eileen Bailey. Also known at the vet’s office as The Highly Esteemed, Her Royal Highness, Queen Molly.

I am certain as time goes on, more of my cats will give me more songs.  I will add them to this page as that happens.
